Featured Author Interview: Ruth Axtell

Ruth Axtell (also known as Ruth Axtell Morren) is the author of several Regency and Maine historical Christian romances. She wrote her first story when she was 12--a spy thriller--and knew she wanted to be a writer.

Picture
There were many detours along the way as she pursued more realistic goals - studying, teaching, working, marriage and family. While living in Holland Ruth began crafting her first serious story in between having children, and gained her first recognition as a writer when she made the finals in the Romance Writers of America Golden Heart Contest in 1994. But it wasn't until their return to the US coast of Maine before she seriously began her writing career.

Ruth's inner journey of faith parallels her outward journey--seemingly circuitous, sometimes wandering in the desert--yet ever-guided by the Good Shepherd.

The following is a June 2014 interview with Ruth.

Blog Tour - Beth K. Vogt

Somebody Like You - Book Review

Beth K. Vogt is a nonfiction author and editor who said she’d never write fiction. She’s the wife of an air force physician who said she’d never marry a doctor—or anyone in the military. She’s a mom of four who said she’d never have kids. She’s discovered that God’s best often waits behind the doors marked “Never.” Somebody Like You is Beth's third novel.
Picture
Can a young widow find love again with her husband’s reflection?

Haley’s three-year marriage to Sam, an army medic, ends tragically when he’s killed in Afghanistan. Her attempts to create a new life for herself are ambushed when she arrives home one evening—and finds her husband waiting for her. Did the military make an unimaginable mistake when they told her Sam was killed?

Too late to make things right with his estranged twin brother, Stephen discovers Sam never told Haley about him. As Haley and Stephen navigate their fragile relationship, they are inexorably drawn to each other. How can they honor the memory of a man whose death brought them together—and whose ghost could drive them apart?

Somebody Like You is a beautifully rendered, affecting novel, reminding us that while we can’t change the past, we have the choice to change the future and start anew.

My Review

This is the first book by Beth K. Vogt that I have read and certainly will not be the last! This gentle love story is one I would love to revisit again.

I really felt the state of shock that Haley was living in as the story opened, which was then compounded by the shock of her coming face to face with the image of her dead husband Sam in his twin, Stephen. With very different quests - Haley coming to terms with a life without Sam and the impending birth of their child, and Stephen trying to find out what became of his brother after they parted ways as teenagers - also comes their story of discovering each other. A part of Haley that she had dismissed as a child slowly emerges once again as Stephen becomes to Haley what she had needed from Sam, but never received. And in being to Haley what he thought Sam would want of him, Stephen discovers he is so much more.

This gentle journey of healing and love is a must read for those who love Becky Wade, Melissa Tagg, Kim Vogel Sawyer, Deborah Raney and Susan May Warren.

Featured Debut Novelist: Kellie Coates Gilbert

Kellie Coates Gilbert is a former legal investigator and trial paralegal who writes with a sympathetic, intimate knowledge of how people react under pressure. Kellie's books tell emotionally poignant stories about women in life-changing circumstances. She writes about messy lives . . . and eternal hope.

Picture
Kellie grew up on a sheep ranch in southern Idaho, a business her family had been in for generations, never dreaming she’d ever see her own name on a novel. She left home to attend Boise State University and spent most of her adult years pursuing a sensible legal career, raising two boys, and learning to be happily married.

But God heard the quiet prayers of a woman who dared to dream big and ask her Lord for the outrageous. In early 2011, Kellie signed her first book contract. Today, she is living her fantasy. Kellie lives in Dallas with her husband, working from home, writing novels. Often by the pool.

The following is a June 2014 interview with Kellie.
